You may never have considered making homemade jelly beans .

It may seem impossible to you because you think that ingredients that are impossible to obtain are needed, but the truth is that this is not the case.

Nothing is further from reality, in fact. To make jellies at home we not only need few ingredients, but they are very basic and can be found in any food store.

The process when preparing these sweets is super easy and fast, except for the rest time of the mixture. Nobody takes that away from us, because the gelatin needs a few hours to take effect, but with a little organization we can well have a tray of homemade jelly beans ready for any time of celebration.

They are much richer than those we are used to buying in kiosks of sweets or in the supermarket. These homemade jelly beans have a very smooth texture and a unique flavor. We have made them from orange, but they can be made from any of the flavors of gelatin powder that you find: lemon, strawberry, kiwi, etc.

To enhance its orange flavor we have used orange juice as a liquid, although water or milk are equally useful. With the recipe that I present today we will get 60 units and it comes out to about € 0.05 per jelly, fantastic, right?

Try preparing them for birthday parties or to give away on family occasions. Children will love doing them with you, they will have a great time at the cinema and they will be excited to think about the final result. You can turn a Saturday afternoon, Sunday or any holiday into a sweet family moment.

Preparation of homemade jelly beans

  1. It must be said that writing how to make homemade jelly beans takes longer (or almost) than making them themselves.
  2. The process is simple until saying enough is enough. The only thing that prevents us from not being able to eat them within 10 minutes of starting is that the mixture needs a rest time for it to take shape and gelatinize. Otherwise, it is child’s play.
  3. In a saucepan we place all the ingredients. That is, orange juice, orange jelly powder, neutral gelatin powder and sugar.
  4. We put on a very soft fire, trying not to boil, and stir while heating for 10 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile we grease the mold with a few drops of vegetable oil, spreading it on the base and sides with the help of our fingers. This way we make sure that we cover the corners well.
  6. Pour the mixture into the mold, gently so that it does not splash, and let it rest at room temperature for 12 hours. When it has lost temperature, we cover the mold so that it does not get dust or dirt.
  7. After the resting time, remove from the mold on vegetable baking paper. With a sharp knife cut into strips across the width and then into cubes and coat in sugar and ready to enjoy.
  8. We have had 12 strips and each one has been cut into five pieces, thus obtaining 60 gummy jellies.
  9. In case of using another type of mold you can adapt the cut as necessary.

Here you have a step by step in photos where I show how to prepare this recipe for homemade jelly beans . Do not miss any detail so that they come out perfect.

Tips for some gummy jellies

  • After cooking the ingredients an opaque layer forms on the surface. This can be left, passing the mixture to the mold, or removed so that the jelly beans are finer.
  • In case of opting for the latter. We pass the base of a spoon over which the layer adheres and is easily removed.
  • It can be substituted in fruit juice (orange, in this case) for water or milk. The flavor is milder, but either is perfectly fine.
  • We can also make jelly beans with various shapes if we have silicone trays, type ice trays.
  • Today they are easy to find in kitchen and kitchenware stores. You can find them with various fruit motifs (apple, bunch of grapes, orange or lemon wedge, etc). They can be made in different flavors depending on the molds we use.
  • In case of opting for this type of mold. It is important to ensure that all nooks and crannies are well covered with oil so that unmolding is quick and easy.
  • To preserve the jelly beans you just have to put them in an airtight container at room temperature. And before putting them in the pot, you should put absorbent kitchen paper or paper napkins at the bottom.
  • How we have coated them in sugar they will not stick. They can give off a little water, that’s why the absorbent paper. It is not recommended to put them in the fridge, as they would be hard as a stone.
