Traditional milk French toast
This original, and at the same time traditional, recipe for the most typical sweet at Easter is a dessert that is based on a slice of bread soaked in milk, coated in egg, fried in extra virgin olive oil and flavored to taste with syrup or, in this case, sugar and cinnamon. It is a very simple and very common dessert of these upcoming dates.
Fritters
In Spain Easter dessert recipes are one of the best dishes of the year. These small balls of fried dough are a delicacy within everyone’s reach, because although it seems like a difficult recipe, it does not have a great complication and it does not have to be a seasonal sweet, they are great at any date of the year.
Mona of Easter
La mona de Pascua is one of the quintessential desserts at the end of Lent and Easter . It is a recipe of great tradition in almost the entire peninsula, but especially in the communities of Murcia, Valencia, Catalonia and Castilla la Mancha. Although in regions such as Galicia and Asturias, there is the roscón or rosco de Pascua , which basically is the same and very similar to the roscón de reyes .
Fried doughnuts
A very typical sweet from Andalusia similar to Galician fried donuts, although I know that they are prepared throughout the year, especially when there is a celebration at home. Along with the French toast and pestiños, we can say that they are part of a triumvirate of frying pan desserts. Being so popular the variations of the same recipe are countless, changing details according to each area or each house.
Pancake or pancake
The pancake is one of the most typical elaborations of Valencian lands during Easter. Depending on the region in which we find ourselves, it will receive very different names: panou, toña, fogaseta, bonfire, pa socarrat, coc, tonya. It is a type of roscón de pascua or mona de pascua, which is another of the sweets that are traditionally consumed in the region on these dates.
Pestiños with honey
In Lent the streets of Andalusia smell of matalauva, orange blossom and pestiños, that fried dough that everyone collaborates on. Normally the town gathers around a basin where the dough is prepared, forming a chain of people to then fry and finish them. It is not just the result, it is the whole process and what goes with it.
Malaga borrachuelos
The term “borrachuelo” derives from the wine that carries the dough, which makes the sweet drunk. It is common to see drunkards in the windows of all the patisseries already at the beginning of Lent, but the most common is to prepare them at home as part of the family holiday ritual.
Gañotes de Ubrique
In the Sierra de Grazalema area, in the province of Cádiz, they prepare a very special sweet during Lent and Easter, a kind of very aromatic spiral-shaped donuts called Gañotes . The preparation of this sweet is so important and deeply rooted in customs, that even in Ubrique they have been holding a contest for gnotes for several years , where attendees can try and then assess those who present themselves.
Coffee French toast
It is an equally easy and simple recipe to prepare as the classic French toast , in which we do not use milk at all. This makes it perfect for lactose intolerant or allergy sufferers. We substitute dairy for a coffee syrup with sugar, highly flavored with lemon, cinnamon and cocoa and finally we continue with the same process as with the more traditional French toast, egg bath and frying.
Cream donuts
There are many variants when it comes to preparing this type of sweet, you will find the donuts of oil , the donuts of anise , the fried donuts like my mother’s and almost one type for each house in which they are prepared. Which shows that this sweet is a perfect option to let our imagination run wild.
Chocolate Eggs or Easter Eggs
In my land what is typical, what is in my memory, is that at Easter the godparents give their godchildren a chocolate Easter egg . For me it was a special moment, I waited patiently for them to come home with the long-awaited trophy, the bigger the better, to open it without waste of time, put on my chocolate boots and discover in passing the surprise inside.
Caramelised French toast
Dare to change the classic French toast for Easter for some caramelized French toast that will triumph at your family’s home. The base is very similar to the classic ones but the end point gives it a different and different touch, although it seems unbelievable, I would say that it is less sweet because the caramel film it carries is very thin.
Apple Fritters
Whether for Easter or All Saints , the donuts are one of the most classic sweets of our country. Along with churros , torrijas and rosquillas , they are the emblem of the classic homemade pastry of all the houses. Its preparation and consumption is fully extended, not only in Spain, but also in almost all of Latin America.
Fried donuts
These donuts are made by my mother Rosa , and since I have memories, it is a recipe that was made to complete the tribute of the Magdalena festivities. They are not the fluffy donuts of the Candil , nor the pasta type that they make in Mancha, nor silly or smart as in Madrid, they are the ones that enter the body with a good shot of brown liquor.
Baked milk French toast
Do you like French toast? Don’t you want to finish off the kitchen as if a tornado had just passed? Is it wrong to fry? Well here I leave you the solution: some baked Easter French toast . In addition to being a little lighter than normal French toast you can cook them easily and almost without staining the kitchen. When making them in the oven we avoid frying them and we get lighter French toast .
We could include even more desserts, cottage cheese with honey, a little cheese with quince, lactose-free French toast, roscón de Pascua, Lenten bones … and many more sweets, which you will surely recommend to me, I await your email.
It is clear that Easter is not a suitable date for diets, with the cold what you want is to put calories into the body. I hope you like all these larpeiradas and enjoy these days of rest, which we have earned.
