How to make Venezuelan donuts or caracheras de leche donuts

You already know my passion for donuts, I have published them in all possible formats, we have more than 40 different recipes, although fried donuts , traditional anise donuts or ronceras donuts are among my favorites.

In my search for the perfect donut , we have come across Venezuelan donuts that are baked in the oven several times, either in cookbooks or on the internet, and we have always been struck by their beautiful shape.

We had to prepare them, so today we said to ourselves “the time has come” and here they are. To their attractive exterior we add, after having put a few between our chests and backs, that they are a delight that you cannot miss.

Furthermore, to add more benefits to the list, its preparation is super easy and does not require rare ingredients. Butter, sugar , vanilla, flour , yeast , salt and milk. You surely have them at home, right? Well, it’s already taking you a while to put our recipe into practice. Furthermore, as you can see, these donuts do not contain eggs and this makes them the perfect sweet for those with allergies and intolerances. Another point in its favor.

Venezuelan donuts or milk donuts are typical of the town of Carache, in the state of Trujillo in Venezuela. They are usually prepared at Christmas in large quantities and consumed throughout the holidays, offering them to guests with coffee . Nothing prevents us from making them at any other time of the year, in fact we are already with the second batch. And you? Do you dare with them?

Preparation of Venezuelan donuts or milk caracheras donuts

  1. In a deep container, add the butter along with the sugar and beat with electric whisks. To make it easier for both ingredients to integrate and to whiten the mixture, the butter should be very soft, almost melted. Next we add the vanilla essence and continue beating.
  2. On the other hand, we mix the flour with the baking powder and salt. We pass it through a sieve or strainer and add it to the previous mixture, little by little and alternating with the milk, while we beat with the electric whisk.
  3. We will obtain a consistent dough with a rough appearance. Don’t panic, to homogenize we leave the rods aside and work with a silicone tongue. The dough will be soft and somewhat elastic.
  4. We cover the container with a clean cloth and let the dough rest for 10-15 minutes in the refrigerator. This way it takes shape, hardens a little and is easier to handle when it comes time to form the donuts.
  5. We weigh the dough and divide by 24. We form balls with the resulting weight so that we have all the donuts of the same size.
  6. We stretch a portion of dough on the work table, forming a long, thin cylinder. We fold it in half and twist it on itself to form a cord. We join the ends forming the donut, pressing lightly so that it is well closed. We repeat the operation with the rest of the dough.

Baking and final presentation of the donuts

  1. We place all the donuts on a baking tray covered with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Finally we brush the donuts with a little milk.
  2. We place the tray in the oven, preheated to 175 °C with heat up and down, and cook the donuts for 14-16 minutes or until the base is lightly golden.
  3. We remove the tray from the oven and transfer the donuts to a metal rack so that they cool more quickly.
  4. We serve with a glass of milk for a snack, after-dinner coffee or enjoy them as is.

Ideal to finish a meal and start an after-dinner meal. Perfect to accompany with a liqueur or a  hot chocolate in the cup .

Tips for perfect Venezuelan donuts or caracheras de leche donuts

  • You can use electric whisks or a robot to prepare the dough . It helps when it comes to achieving the necessary texture, but it is not essential. Don’t miss out on trying them because you don’t have any of these devices.
  • The dough needs to rest before forming the donuts. It’s easier to handle if it’s cold from the fridge so don’t skip this step. If you are in a hurry, it is better to leave its preparation for another time.
  • Venezuelan donuts stay in perfect condition for days , although you may not have a chance to check it because they are so delicious that they will fly away.
